(ABOLITION.) Blank petition circulated by the Women's Loyal National League, seeking full emancipation. One partial printed page, 8¼ x 8½ inches, blank with no signatures; full closed tear with tape repair on verso, bottom blank portion torn off, foxing and wear.
No place, circa late 1863
The Women's Loyal National League was founded in May 1863 under the leadership of Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, with the goal of completing the partial abolition measures of the Emancipation Proclamation. Several different printings of this petition were circulated in the following months. It urges Congress: "The Undersigned, Men of the United States above the age of eighteen years, earnestly pray that your Honorable Body will pass, at the earliest practicable day, an Act emancipating all Persons of African descent held to involuntary service or labor in the United States."
Half a million signatures were collected and presented to Senator Charles Sumner by February 1864, which he credited as an important factor in the eventual passage of the Thirteenth Amendment. We trace no other examples of the petition at auction.
